Academia de Policía (Arkaute)
Entrada del Museo

The Basque Country's Police Academy first opened on the 8th of February, 1982 for a group of students who would later become the academy's first graduates. Since then, the facilities have undergone constant upgrades to adjust to the growing needs of a modern, efficient police force.

It was precisely in 1982 that the building of the present-day's Basque Police Museum was built. In the beginning, this building was the headquarters of the Ertzaintza's (Basque Police) different Police Units.

The building has undergone extensive renovations, to make it suitable for the purposes of the Museum: to recover, restore, maintain, document, and above all, to exhibit, for study, education and enjoyment purposes, all the material evidence which contributes towards the reconstruction of the past of the police force, and which facilitates understanding of today's particular police system which is exclusive to the Basque Country Autonomous Community, and which was established following the 1978 Basque Country's Statute of Autonomy. The Museum was inaugurated by the Lehendakari (President) of the Basque Country, Mr. José Antonio Ardanza Garro, on 17 December, 1998.
