The main tasks are the prevention, maintenance, and where applicable, restoration of public order and public safety, traffic and road transport surveillance and control, basic duties of the Criminal Investigation Department in its Territorial Units, duties corresponding to the powers of the Basque Country Autonomous Community in relation to private security, and specialised support and assistance to the different Units of the Ertzaintza. In order to fulfil the duties it has been assigned, it is structured into the following Units, Sections and Services.

1.- Central services: Their specific task is to provide assistance to the Head of the Division in the management, co-ordination and supervision of public safety operations. It comprises the following services:

• Technical Secretariat
• Central Control Centre

2.- Territorial Units, Sections and Services:

• Regional Police Headquarters. Their duties are to plan, co-ordinate, and manage the activities carried out by the Units and Services of the Public Safety Division located within the Historical Territory. They comprise the following services:

• Technical Secretariat
• Regional Central Control Centres

• Regional Traffic Units. Their specific task is the surveillance and control of road traffic on highways and freeways, and road safety. They also carry out road transport control duties, special transport escorting, and for sports events. Traffic accident investigation and specialised support to local police.

• Miñones, Mikeletes and Foral Guard Sections. Their specific tasks are: to represent the foral (provincial) institutions, protection of authorities, and protection and custody of provincial heritage. They may also carry out road transport surveillance and inspection activities, maintenance, and road police work.

• Police Stations. Their task is to provide security, protection and assistance to the community within the scope of their territory. They also carry out activities for the prevention, maintenance and where applicable, restoration of public order and public safety, traffic surveillance and control and road safety, custody and surveillance of other institutions, where applicable, and basic duties of the Criminal Investigation Department in the scope of their territory.
