The main purpose is to provide support and assistance to the Units which comprise the Public Safety Division and the Criminal Investigation Department. It is structured into the following Units and Operational Groups:

1.- Flying Squad Unit. Its specific task is to prevent, maintain, and where required, to restore public order in high risk situations. As a permanent task, it must provide support to the Ertzaintza's Public Safety Division Units, and support on specific occasions to other Units. It must also intervene in situations such as accidents, disasters or calamities.

2.- Helicopter Unit: Its specific task is to provide air support to the Units and Services of the Public Safety Division and the Criminal Investigation Department, in tasks of prevention, investigation or intervention. It also provides support to the emergency services.

3.- Bomb Disposal Unit. Its specific task is to intervene in all those situations which require the neutralisation of explosive substances or devices.

4.- Operational Groups Unit: It has the specific task of providing security services to persons, buildings and facilities which may require protection due to their special interest or risk. It also covers the task of providing high security and cynological support to other Ertzaintza Units. It is organised into the following Operational Groups:

  • Security Operational Group
  • Bodyguard Operational Group
  • Intervention Operational Group
  • Canine Operational Group
